Alberta's 15-year-olds ranked among the best in the world on an international test examining reading, mathematical and scientific literacy. On reading, the major focus of the 2009 tests, Alberta students achieved the highest average score in Canada and tied internationally for second with South Korea, Finland, and Hong Kong-China.
Students in Shanghai, China, topped the world in reading. Alberta students also achieved top grades in scientific literacy, ranking first among Canadian provinces and second worldwide. On the math side of the equation, Alberta ranked eighth internationally and second among Canadian provinces.
